Companion Websites

Establishing an online course in conjunction with the textbook

Companion websites have become the new way of facilitating on-line education. They provide the necessary interaction between the student and the textbook. Companion websites add a host of activities, information and self-test opportunities to the excellent texts and provide an ideal environment for quality Objective Directed Learning. The following elements may be available as features on companion websites:

  • Quizzes that give instant results through an "Online Reporter"
    • Multiple Choice
    • True-or-False
    • Fill in the Blank

  • "Web Destinations" with links to websites with relevant support material
  • Numerous links to Websites related to student success and study skills
  • "Writing Resources Centres" with links to dictionaries, thesauruses, writing tutorials, style and grammar guides, and additional study tools
  • A research area that saves time finding the most valuable and relevant material available on the Internet. The research area provides a resource library that includes links to tutorials, virtual libraries, Internet resources and more. Each link is annotated to expedite your research.
  • Brief articles stemming from each chapter of the particular textbook
  • A Message Board from which the student can take note of events and discussions
  • A Chat Room that allows communication between students and with the author about pertinent questions and topics

Not every Companion Website offers the same features since the contents are produced by
the writers of the textbooks (or the publisher) who is free to determine the contents of the site.

Calvary may also develop a few pages for many, or all, of its courses on the Calvary Website. This will have the advantage that the course professor is able to provide updated content for a particular course when this becomes available. Reference to this will be made on the Course CD together with the links provided.
